Climate change impacts
on South-east Asia
World Green Energy Forum 2008

 The
World Green Energy Forum 2008 was held at Gyeongju, South
Korea, where Dr Pachauri spoke about Climate Change impacts
in South-east Asia. His presentation covered the observed
and projected impacts of climate change on and the consequences
of sea-level rise on millions of people living in the low
lying areas of South, South-East and East Asia such as in
Vietnam, Bangladesh, India and China. He also discussed the
risks to coral reefs and biodiversity, and how up to 50% of
the Asia's total biodiversity is at risk due to climate change.
He stressed the importance of mainstreaming sustainable development
policies and the inclusion of climate-proofing concepts in
national development initiatives. The event was attended by
the Prime Minister of South Korea and the Mayor of the North
Gyeongsang province. This was followed by a brief press conference
hosted by the Forum for Dr Pachauri, attended by several mainstream
Korean television channels and newspapers. Dr Pachauri lauded
the new 'green growth' plan that South Korea had launched,
and said that he looked forward to other countries initiating
such forward-looking development policies.

Dr R K Pachauri delivered the 2008 Peter Roberts Memorial lecture,
named after the founder of the British charity, Compassion in
World Farming, on Monday, 8 September 2008 in London. His talk,
entitled 'Global Warning - The impact of meat production and
consumption on climate change' was attended by over 400 people.
During his speech, Dr Pachauri highlighted the worrying implications
of meat production and consumption in terms of greenhouse gas
emissions, water and energy consumption, pollution, and food
availability. These statements have triggered a worldwide debate
on the role of meat consumption, and the necessity of lifestyle
changes in the fight against climate change. 
Dr Pachauri spoke at the opening session of ‘The Future
in our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of Climate
Change’—a conference organized by the UN Secretary-General
in New York on 24 September 2007. He began by outlining how
the human race had altered Earth’s atmosphere and went
on to present the key findings of the three Working Groups of
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Finally, he exhorted
all to give up inaction and take up measures to check climate
change. 
In
his first appearance before the US Congress on 27 January Dr
Pachauri shared his views on the urgency of addressing global
warming issues in the new climate legislation that the US political
leaders are considering to bring up this year. Dr Pachauri addressed
the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.
